About SmartLNB

A consortium around Eutelsat has developed the SmartLNB, a small device that combines satellite TV and internet, potentially providing tens of millions of DTH consumers extra capabilities like interactive TV, social media, video on demand via IP-TV channels, multi screen viewing in the home, and home automation services.

The smart LNB is an innovative device that, while allowing traditional Ku-band reception of DTH satellite signals, provides a narrowband return link with full IP routing. The smart LNB reuses the coaxial cabling of existing installations and is connected to the IP home network as well as to legacy STB’s. It enables a wide range of Connected TV and M2M usage scenarios, offering a transparent bidirectional IP link compatible with existing applications, and ready to support advanced services provided by the satellite bouquet operators. Possible services include: payment transactions, subscription-based and on-demand services, voting, betting, rights clearing, social applications, customer intelligence, home automation, data gathering. For the first time in satellite services evolution, the smart LNB provides a cost-effective solution for interactive broadcasting and M2M services, scalable to tens of millions users, with a consumer-grade equipment.
